Occupation:   David attended University of Missouri Columbia and participated in the Navy ROTC program. He graduated from college in 1967.  He enlisted in the Navy, and was active duty where he attended different schooling in increments of 6 month periods:  Submarine training, Nuclear Power Reactor training and Nuclear Reactor Theory. Then he reported to the USS Sunfish SSN 649 Sturgeon-class attack submarine.    He served 27 years of combined active and reserve duty in the Navy. His highest rank was a Captain O-6, a 4 striper.

Major Jobs:  After leaving the Navy, he worked with numerous defense electronic contractors until he retired.

Why you decided to join the Knights?  He attended the Fun Fest at St. Gabriel’s and as he was eating at the hamburger stand Bill Engelbrecht talked to him about the Knights.  David was interested in joining because he wanted to give back to the community.  This was about 19 years ago. David reached the level of 3rd Degree.

What kept you in the Knights:     The ability to give back to the community and encourage people to be the best that they could be.   David participated in the Nights to Remember, the Fun Fest, Lenten Fish Dinners, Tootsie Roll campaign.  His favorite project was the Coats for Kids.  He worked as the leader for this project.

Favorite Hobby:  David enjoys being a Knight and improving his skills in playing bocce ball.  He plays at the Senior Citizen Center here in Poway. This is something he really enjoys doing.

If you got to start over again after graduating from school, what would you change?  David attended SDSU and was a dorm counselor for 3 years while he attended college.  He obtain a Master’s Degree in Administration.  He advised that he wouldn’t have done anything different in his life.  He is very happy how it turned out.

Did you travel much?  David has been on 10-15 ocean cruises.   His wife Rosary likes to travel also. He has been to most every country in Europe.   His favorite countries were Norway, Denmark, Sweden and China.  The most interesting place he visited was Israel 3 or 4 years ago.  He was there for 18 days.  He visited all of the holy sites.  He has also been to India, England, Ireland, Florence, Rome, and Monte Carlo.

How long have you been a Parishioner of St. Gabriel’s?  David has been a parishioner at St. Gabriel’s for 15-20 years.   He was part of the old church.  He remembers that they had naugahyde seats and there were no kneelers.  Besides Knight of Columbus, he has participated in the Men’s Bible Study.

How many hours have you volunteered over the year?   Before Covid, he would volunteer about 10 hours a month.   (120 hours a year).
